Literature to Cinema: Adapting Nobel Laureates
Lecture by Terry Meehan, Instructor of Lifelong Learning

Can literature written by a Nobel Laureate be successfully adapted to film? Some Laureates have even tried their hand at screenwriting George Bernard Shaw actually won an Oscar for the screenplay of Pygmalion, our first film. Our second film is Away from Her, written and directed by Sarah Polley and based on Nobel Laureate Alice Munro’s short story, The Bear Came over the Mountain. Both the written works and films will be analyzed and discussed.

Clara Barton and Henri Dunant: Establishing Human Rights

Ever since the dawn of existence, there has been conflict, violence, and warfare. And for just as long, there has been the need for care, nurturing, and humanitarianism. We will discuss two individuals who demonstrated these traits in the 19th century, Henri Dunant and Clara Barton. Lunch will be provided.
